Relocating to Lithuania

Registering Essentials

When relocating to Lithuania you need to lodge an application for the issue of a residence permit with the diplomatic mission or consular post of Lithuania abroad. Documents shall be submitted personally to the Lithuanian Embassy in alien’s home country or to the Lithuanian Migration Office directly if alien is legally in the Republic of Lithuania.  You need the following documents:

But the system may be more complex and you should contact the Lithuanian embassy in London well before you intend to relocate.

Lithuania House 2,

Bessborough Gardens,

Tel.+44 (0)20 7592 2840

Fax+44 (0)20 7592 2864

Depending on your reason for relocating the temporary residence permit usually lasts for one year, and may grant you the right to have work permit. Family members may be issued a temporary residence permit for the same period and require the documents proving their relationship.

Although Britain is not a member of the Schengen Area, and therefore customs formalities apply, because we are members of the EU, there is little of consequence to concern the average Briton relocating to Lithuania. If you stop at another Schengen country on your way to Lithuania, the controls will be dealt with there.

The rules that do apply are designed to ensure the safety and security on the external borders of the Schengen area – which does cover most of Europe. It protects health of humans and animals, and protects national treasures and economic interests. However, rules do change and you are advised to check with the Lithuanian embassy well before you leave the UK. You do not want to be held up at the border.

Bringing in cash in excess of 10 thousand Euro (£8,100) will bring you tedious customs procedures. Failure to declare it is a criminal offence, and you may even be imprisoned. Medication must be for two weeks personal use only, with a prescription. Moving to Lithuania with Pets

Pets require their own pet passport, microchips, rabies vaccinations within 1 year, but not closer than 21 days from departure, and up to date routine vaccinations.

If you intend to bring the pet back to the UK you must ensure the rabies vaccinations are kept up to date.
